Duane Paul: Live From the Raven's Nest | Full Show Duane has been playing guitar since his high school days, and started writing his own songs since returning to his home community of Temagami First Nation over fifteen years ago. Duane is one of the last fluent speakers of the Temagami dialect. His inspiration comes from the land, places, legends, and people of his homeland. Duane provides the guitar accompaniment to all his original songs, both rhythm and lead. He has performed at venues ranging from the Royal York Hotel in Toronto to the Bear Island Music Festival to various cultural events in the Temagami region. Duane cites John Prine, Gordon Lightfoot, Bob Dylan, and John Lennon as influences, but his unique voice and picking style create a sound that is fresh and original. Duane looks forward to recording a full CD of his original work this year, entitled “Warrior Songs”.

Tasheena Sarazin was here at the Raven's Nest on October 6th from 7-9pm. She performed her debut album "Beaver Soup" as well as a number of unheard singles, and a sneak peek at her upcoming album. She also performed traditional Powwow drumming with her partner Elijah, which unfortunately was not recorded, but it was beautiful. A member of the Algonquins of Pikwàkanagàn First Nation, Tasheena has grown up in and around the urban and rural spaces of North Bay, Ontario. Growing up with connections to the land has meant different things at different times of her life. As a youth living and working on the powwow trail, she grew up with powwow family and ceremony, the value of teachings and her own Indigeneity and connections to Anishinaabek territory firmly grasped. As an adult juggling career and parenthood, like many other Black, Indigenous, women of colour, Tasheena continues to be challenged by secure housing that meets the special needs of her family. A family-centered approach is the key to her success. “I’m truly fortunate to have my brother live in and help. I think of the people without family support and resources to access what is needed for their special need’s child from Jordan’s Principle. It’s gotten a lot worse since the pandemic started.” Despite these challenges, Tasheena continues to work hard towards what her family needs most. A mortgage and a home to call their own. “I dream about creating a safe space for all three of my boys to grow in safety and learn about life in balance with the land.” On November 3, Duane Paul will be performing in the Raven's Nest from 7 to 9pm.
